How To Remodel A Bathroom On A Budget
Use extended light fixtures over medicine cabinets as a first step.
Close-to-the-wall light fixtures won't provide enough illumination for a medicine cabinet. Installing a long-necked light fixture is a simple option. Purchase one with the light bulb placed above and in front of the mirror.
Check out granite vanity tops as a second option.
Granite countertops were once reserved for just the most opulent bathrooms. However, home centers now sell them for less than $200, complete with an attached, under-mounted sink. If you need a vanity for a corner, look for one with a backsplash on the back and one side to keep water off the walls. Before putting the vanity top in place, install the faucet. You won't have to lie down inside the vanity on your back and reach up under the faucet.
Frame the mirror and light it from the side.
A simple mirror can be dressed up with a tile or wood frame. Any tile will suffice (we used a mosaic glass tile). Using mastic glue, adhere the tile to the wall. To avoid scratching the mirror, tape it off and use unsanded grout.
A wood mirror frame can either be purchased from a framing company, or you can purchase wood molding with a rabbet cut into the back and construct your own frame. Before putting the frame together, paint or stain it.
Sconces on both sides of a mirror will provide more lighting than ceiling lights. Shadows on your face are eliminated by light cast from opposite sides. Two lights reflected in the mirror can also illuminate the space.
Install a curved curtain rod as a fourth tip.
A curved curtain rod not only provides the bathroom a sleek look with its soft radius, but it also gives you extra elbow room in the shower. To complete the new design, you may utilize your existing shower curtain or purchase a new curtain and new rings in the same finish as the curtain rod.
In bathrooms, crown molding has a tremendous impression. Because bathrooms are small, you can get a lot of style for $50 to $100. Urethane is a suitable choice for painted crown because, unlike wood, it does not expand and shrink with changes in humidity. With sticky caulk and nails, urethane molding is lightweight and simple to install. 8-foot portions are $3 to $15 less expensive than wood of the same length and are available at home centers.
Add a shower shelf as a sixth tip.
Shelves are available at home centers and tile stores, and they are attached to tile walls using all-purpose construction adhesive. Apply glue to the back of the shelf, tape it in place, and wait 24 hours for it to dry. This method is only applicable to tile walls, not fiberglass surrounds.
Replace old faucets with new ones.
The shower gets a quick and inexpensive makeover with new plumbing fixtures. When replacing a single-handle shower faucet, use a shower trim kit. These renovation kits include everything you need to refresh the style of your faucet while keeping the existing valve in place, including a new handle and wall plate. That means you won't have to deal with any in-wall plumbing issues. Make sure the new faucet is the same brand as your old one. Some models can be found in home improvement stores. If your brand isn't listed, contact the manufacturer to find out where you may get one.
